Mother mourns her son's death

Accompanied by the president of Pridnestrovie, Igor Smirnov, a mother mourns the loss of her son. A defender of the republic's border, her son was shot dead in the 1992 struggle for self-determination when residents of the newly independent country fought off Moldovan forces bent on defeating Pridnestrovie's freedom.
