Coat of arms of Pridnestrovie

PMR
Coat of arms of Pridnestrovie

In keeping with the historical traditions of the country, the official coat of arms* of Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica is based on a modified version of the coat of arms which existed before independence from the Soviet Union. The initials of the country (PMR) are shown in three languages, and always in the officially-used Cyrillic alphabet: Russian, Moldavian and Ukrainian.

Drawing on the past history of the area, the coat of arms respectfully represents Pridnestrovie's traditions but should not be misinterpreted as a dogmatic adherence to communism or the Soviet system. Today's Pridnestrovie has modernized and is now a free and open multi-party democracy with a market based economy, a modern political outlook, respect for human rights, its own convertible currency and a regional example of socially conscious privatizations.

Independence day of the PMR: 2 September 1990.

*Technically speaking, it is a national emblem (and not strictly a coat of arms, due to lack of several heraldry elements.)
