After independence in 1990 and the approval of a new Constitution, Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica now has a separation of powers and an effective system of checks and balances. Here's how it is structured.
The separation of powers (trias politica) which Pridnestrovie has incorporated as the basis for its state structure is a model for the governance of the state which requires the division of political power between an executive, a legislature, and a judiciary. Under this model, each branch has separate and independent powers and areas of responsibility; however, each branch is also able to place limits on the power exerted by the other branches.

The foundations of the state system are enforced by the Constitution of Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica adopted by a referendum which also establishes the rights, freedoms and obligations of citizens. Under the law, sovereign state power is vested in the people of the republic and is exercised by Parliament, the President, the Government and the Courts.
Parliament
Pridnestrovie's highest lawmaking body is a one-chamber
parliament [1] composed of 43 members elected for a five-year term. The democratically elected parliament chooses its own Chairman (the Speaker) and Deputy Chairmen.
President
The democratically elected
president of the republic [1] is the country's Head of State. The president represents Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica and performs all the duties which he or she is charged with by the Constitution and laws. The President of Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica is elected by the citizens of the republic on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot for a term of five years.
National Government
The national
government [1] is the highest authority of executive power. It comprises the government ministries, whose ministers are appointed by the President of the Republic with the approval of Parliament.
Local government
Local self-government is organized on the basis of the administrative and territorial division of the republic. The country consists of 7 administrative regions: Tiraspol, Bender, Rybnitsa, Kamenka, Dubossary, Grigoriopol, and Slobozya. The
local administrative councils [1] are democratically elected by the local population on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot.
Courts
Justice is exercised exclusively by courts. The court system in Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica is headed by the country's
Supreme Court. [1] A modern system of arbitrage is also in place, used mostly for business disputes and administered by the country's Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Pridnestrovie, which is a member of the International CCI.
Pridnestrovie's Supreme Court is extremely vigilant and alert to any sort of practice which is feels can infringe on the Constitution or which smacks of a tendency towards a "creeping dictatorship". It is often contrary to the President, and sometimes overturn laws when it feels that the legislative branch is not doing its best. It takes a strong defense of private property rights, among other things, and has in the past nullified tax laws as well as with a retroactive reach and laws attempting to hand too much power to the executive.
