As the traditional frontier against the Moldovans (and historically never a part of Moldova or greater Romania), Pridnestrovie's side of the Dniester River was always heavily fortified. Throughout the border old historical forts and military installations testify to the country's important role in history as the frontier and border where two separate nations meet.
