President: "Pridnestrovians, together, create their future"

Every year during the nation's Independence Day celebrations the president of Pridnestrovie gives a "State of the Republic" speech. Here are some of the highlights from the speech given by Igor Smirnov on the 15th anniversary of the Republic's independence.

Pridnestrovie's elected leader hears from citizens

" For centuries Pridnestrovie has been a part of many states. A special character of people, an open multicultural society has formed here, a unique synthesis of peoples has happened, it is named the Pridnestrovian people.
Today we remember that fateful time when Pridnestrovians pronounced and, once and for all, determined their future. The distant September of 1990 went down in our newest history as a triumph of the Pridnestrovian idea based on words clear for every person: Freedom, equality and social justice.

For the past 15 years the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic has endured a complicated economic development connected with the transference from a single Soviet economy to the market economy. The period entailed the breaking of a normal way of life, the overcoming of negative after-effects of different blockades and restrictions.

Pridnestrovie has been and still is open to the democratic processes and further development of the civil society.
Moreover, we are ready to submit all the necessary facts to the world in order to put to rest, once and for all, the unfounded accusations concerning us. Our state intends to improve the informational policy.
Many times we’ve offered a monitoring mission along the entire border between Moldova and Pridnestrovie. We have also offered independent international monitoring of any Pridnestrovian company or factory suspected of weapons production.

Only Pridnestrovians and only together should create their future. Any decision imposed on Pridnestrovie from the outside is doomed to failure.
There are many civil society organizations in Pridnestrovie which have taken an active part in formation of the state policy. The future of our people is the Pridnestrovian people’s idea - a basis of unity and social harmony. We should decide ourselves and then explain to our children what country they will live in in the future. "
