Health care is free in Pridnestrovie, provided by the state as part of a comprehensive set of social programs. Here's a quick look at what the country achieved in the field since it became independent in 1990.
All citizens in Pridnestrovie get free medical treatment as part of the national health care system. Medicines are subsidized (and sometimes free) for the poor.
Promoting progress in the national health care system is a top priority of the social policy of Pridnestrovie's democratically elected government. It is implemented under the guidelines of “The program on development of the national health system and medical sciences in Pridnestrovie”. This system is an impressive achievement in Pridnestrovie's nation building efforts and quite a bit better than anything found in either Moldova or Ukraine, the two neighboring countries with whom Pridnestrovie shares international borders.
Recent structural reforms of the national health system and introduction of new medical technologies were aimed at optimizing a network of health institutions and were carried out through a modernization of the nation's health institutions. The quality of the medical aid is now markedly improved, with new methods of diagnostics and treatment having been introduced on Western European lines. In 2005, top hospitals were overhauled and supplied with brand new diagnostic equipment.
It is an example of a state that works
In a region of failed states, Pridnestrovie is an example of a state that actually works. The backbone of the national health care system consists of an out-patient’s department, hospitals, clinics, physicians, pediatricians, obstetrician-gynecologists working on an assigned territory according to the principle of a family doctor when a district doctor organizes medical treatment for the population.
The poor get free or heavily discounted medicines. For these socially disadvantaged groups, the government subsidizes purchases at any of the country's pharmacies. And in 2005, Parliament passed state programmes on immunization of the population and improvement of the oncologic aid in the republic.
What's next? Health care keeps improving in Pridnestrovie. New for 2006 is a block of legislative acts and the draft law on medical insurance of all citizens in Pridnestrovie.
